I'd give this book 3.5 stars. I almost gave it 4 but some characteristics of Sophia and James ultimately had me dropping off half a star. It was still a solid read from these authors and if you've read any of the other books in the Disciples series and enjoyed this one, you should like the latest installment as well. Note: if you haven't read any novels in this series, you don't need to as it would hold up fine as a standalone. Be warned, though, there are plenty of crossovers as both characters and events from the other books are referred to, so if you're a stickler for starting series from the beginning, you might want to start with Keeping Lily, but you certainly don't have to.While James has been kicking around this series since the first book, Sophia was introduced in Book 3 with her friends Beth and Amanda when they were kidnapped and about to be sold into a Russian sex trafficking ring. We're given a quick refresher at the start of this novel, as well as the scene where James and Sophia meet, before being shot forward seven months. Sophia's father has just been killed and fearing Sophia is in danger, James takes immediate action by inserting himself into her life. Trying to find out who was responsible for it and keeping Sophia safe pretty much sums up the plot of the book. This book has the features that make this series popular with its loyal readers. There's an over the top jealous and possessive anti-hero, steamy, intense scenes between our couple, a bit of over the top action revolving around their criminal enterprises and gratuitous violence. There's the instalust/love between the couple as James makes Sophia the centre of his world, not taking no for an answer and setting up a bit of dubious consent around deprivation of liberty as she's not given a choice to go with him. You get to see the usual suspects as Lucifer and his gang of merry men wreak havoc across Garden City as the city's main criminal organisation. The above elements I just mentioned I liked just fine and are what I love about this series. What gave this book a slightly different feel from the others for me, however, were the characters James and Sophia. While we've seen James muck around, a whole new level of borderline immaturity was transferred onto the pages here. He had a running monologue that spewed out pretty much every thought in his head and made him almost sound a bit socially awkward as well as juvenile. He had a few rants that stopped some of the fluency of the story as they were a bit incoherent and there was some repetition, e.g. she's driving me crazy, I can't live without her, I stalked her, need to protect her, she's my obsession, etc. There just seemed to be a constant diatribe coming from him about this or that that unfortunately took a lot of shine off the bad and dangerous vibe he had projected heavily in previous books. Oh and his constant arousal and protective instinct towards Sophia was laid on thickly, taking off some of that shine I just mentioned as well. Don't get me wrong, I love a possessive alpha but when it's heaped on this much, it starts to become a little too over the top.Sophia ran along the same lines, making some stupid decisions and contributing to a bit of ridiculous dialogue here and there that made her more annoying than endearing at times. I won't spoil anything here, but she makes a choice as one point that slam dunks her straight into the too stupid to live category. I get that it added drama but you could see it coming a mile off and it was up there with characters of horror movies saying 'I'll be right back'. Add that to her footstomping-esque behaviour and carrying on like a kid in a school yard and she wasn't my favourite character from this series. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate her, but she annoyed me, too, as did James. Oh, and she's a virgin. Of course she is *insert eye roll here*.James and Sophia's initial meeting at the start of the book also had me raising my eyebrows. She's just been kidnapped from a sex trafficking ring and initiates a make out session with a stranger after seeing a couple of people shot. I get adrenaline is high but after suffering humiliation and an almost kidnapping I'm going to chuck this into the 'Yeah, nah' category. Speaking of which, there was also mention of who she was being sold to. This went nowhere. The book was pretty predictable. You know who the antagonists are as plenty of hints are dropped along the way so when it's confirmed there are no surprises. There was also very little lead up to the who dunnit and their solving of who was involved was entirely too convenient and easy but the action that followed it was good. I loved the dialogue between the team in the book, particularly anything to do with Simon. His being a germaphobe lends itself to heaps of entertaining banter. If you don't like pets featuring heavy in books, considered yourself warned because James and Sophia mention their animals so much they're basically their own characters. We get it - they love their pets. Sophia is also apparently the dog whisperer as the dog barks to communicate with her and show her something in the house. Riiiiight. James later compares himself with the cat so I guess it evens out? There's also a little bit of an overlap with Book 5, but as a said above you don't need to have read it.There were a couple of steamy scenes but I found most of the book revolved around James wanting to keep Sophia. There was a strange scene where we see James had handcuffs installed on his bed and red lights to illuminate his room, so there was that, too, because nothing says I need to call the police like a guy who's that prepared to tie someone up.It was an over the top read like the others but I wish James and Sophia would have stayed a bit truer to the bad-a$$ characters that the other books had as they didn't quite gel to the series' themes and it took them too far over the edge. Oh, and the book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Eeep. I still liked it even though it took me a bit longer to read than the others because I couldn't solidly get into it at times. Speaking of which, it was a great length, probably helped along by all those monologues of James and Sophia's lol. I'll still definitely be one-clicking the next book in the series when in comes out because even though it sounds like I've had my own rant, it was still an entertaining story and I enjoy these authors. I can’t express well enough how much I love this series of interconnected standalone books, written by Izzy Sweet and Sean Moriarty, entitled The Disciples. The stories are well written and interesting. The characters are so vividly portrayed that the reader feels a sort of relationship with each of them. The universe in which they live is perfectly conveyed. Every time I finish a new release in this series, I go back and reread each book in order, ending again with the latest story. It doesn’t matter how many times I reread these books; I enjoy thoroughly each and every time I enter their world. This book, Trapping Sophia, is another wonderful addition to the series. James, one of my favorite Disciples, is the Hero of this tale. Sophia is the Heroine and, my oh my, what a pair these two make. The plot is exciting and engaging, sexy and smart; the characters are real and believable, and the world building is vivid and complete. I loved every page.If you like mafia fiction, mixed with a bit of darkness, intrigue and action, then this excellent series is perfect for you. I highly recommend these two authors and whatever they produce, but I especially recommend this series. Beyond good.
